Lakers stop slide with blowout of Boston

Basketball Betting Lines

02/24/2007 - Los Angeles, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Kobe Bryant scored 22 of his 38 points in the first quarter, as the Lakers pounded Boston, 122-96, snapping a six-game skid, the first such losing streak in Phil Jackson's 16-year NBA coaching career.

Bryant ended 13-of-23 from the field, including a 5-of-7 clip from three-point range, and also had nine assists, as Los Angeles won for the first time since February 5 at Atlanta.

"It was good to win a game," Jackson said. "Kobe said before the game he couldn't wait for the game to start and he carried us. We were in an attack mode tonight."

Andrew Bynum added 16 points for the Lakers, who avoided their sixth straight loss at the Staples Center.

All-Star dunk champion Gerald Green had 21 points for the Celtics, who lost for the 21st time in 22 games. Al Jefferson had 18 points and Paul Pierce 15 for Boston, which has lost 11 in a row on the road, two shy of the club record established at the conclusion of the 1978-79 season.

Even though the Lakers won in a rout, it was the Celtics who started the game with a flurry. Brian Scalabrine's three-pointer made it 7-0 and the advantage reached nine, the last time at 17-8 on a Ryan Gomes reverse layup. However, Bryant then came alive and the game immediately changed.

The All-Star nailed three consecutive shots from beyond the arc, and Maurice Evans' jam tied the game at 19. Evans then came up with a steal and two free throws, and Bryant slammed after a Pierce missed shot for a 23-19 Laker lead.

Bryant put the finishing touches on a great first quarter with a jumper, as the Lakers were in front 34-30 going into the second.

The Celtics never went ahead again, although they did get within a point at 52-51 following a Pierce layup with 3:08 remaining in the half. LA then pulled away by scoring the final nine of the half for a 65-54 cushion. That included a frustrating time for Pierce, who committed an offensive foul with 19 seconds left and then a technical. Bryant hit that free throw for the final point of the half.

The start of third also belonged to Bryant, who netted LA's first seven points, It was part of a 10-2 spurt to open the period, and Jackson's team turned it into a rout. Evans' alley-oop jam, which turned into a three-point play bolstered the lead to 86-62 midway through the third, and the score stood at 98-74 going into the fourth.

The Lakers used their reserves most of the final period.

"Our effort was horrible," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "We played well until about four minutes left in the first half. We turned the ball over too many times and the game was over after that."

Smush Parker ended with 12 points, Evans 11 and Brian Cook 10 for the Lakers, who shot 54.2 percent from the field.

Delonte West had 12 points, while Scalabrine and Gomes each scored 10 for Boston.
