Gasol and Memphis hold off Portland

02/24/2007 - Portland, OR (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Pau Gasol scored 23 points, as the Memphis Grizzlies edged the Portland Trail Blazers, 103-102, in a wild finish at the Rose Garden.

Trailing 98-89 with a tick under five minutes left, Portland rattled off the next nine points ended by a Jamaal Magloire hook shot to tie the score at 98.

Hakim Warrick gave Memphis a breath of life by converting a pair of free throws with 17.6 seconds left for a 100-98 lead. Zach Randolph then missed on a layup attempt, and Mike Miller grabbed the loose ball. He fed it to Rudy Gay streaking downcourt for a double-clutch reverse slam with 3.8 seconds left to make it a two-possession game.

But, Brandon Roy quickly drained a deep three-pointer from the left wing with 1.4 seconds on the clock to make the score 102-101.

Damon Stoudamire then got fouled. He hit the first, and purposefully missed the second. However, a loose ball foul was called on Lawrence Roberts, allowing Ime Udoka a chance to send the game into overtime. He made the first, but missed the second, as Memphis escaped with the win.

Warrick posted 20 points and seven rebounds for Memphis, which snapped a three-game losing streak and played the finale of a four-game road trip. Miller had 19 points and seven assists for the Grizzlies, who are a brutal 4-25 on the road this season.

Chucky Atkins scored 11 points and Gay added 10 for Memphis, which returns home to host the Denver Nuggets on Monday and the Utah Jazz on Wednesday at FedExForum.

Randolph posted 25 points and seven rebounds for the Trail Blazers, who had won two straight games since the All-Star break. Roy scored 19 points, Jarrett Jack 18, and Magloire added 14 points and 10 rebounds.

On the injury front for Portland, center Joel Przybilla (left knee) sat out the contest, while guard Sergio Rodriguez (sprained left ankle) returned to score two points and dish out a pair of assists.

Portland made a small deal at the trade deadline. The Toronto Raptors acquired guard Juan Dixon from the Trail Blazers in exchange for guard/forward Fred Jones, who sat out because he has yet to pass the physical.

The Trail Blazers are 13-15 at home this season. They will return to the court on Monday when they visit All-Star Ray Allen and the Seattle SuperSonics at KeyArena.

Memphis attained an early advantage by going on an 8-0 run midway through the first capped by a Miller layup with 5:23 left, and led 33-23 heading into the second.

The Grizzlies added to their lead by closing the first half on an 8-3 spurt capped by a Gasol jumper with two ticks left for a 58-50 halftime advantage.

Portland got going midway through the third on a 9-0 run finished by a Roy jumper with 3:28 on the clock to take a 78-73 lead. The Blazers led, 82-79, heading into the fourth.

The Grizzlies blew the game open in the fourth, going on a 14-0 run capped by a Gay dunk with 6:09 to make the score 95-87.

Game Notes

This was the third of four meetings between the squads this season. Portland won the two previous contests, which were both played at Memphis...Memphis has won four of its last five at Portland. The teams have split the last six games in the series...Portland is scheduled to host the Grizzlies on March 29th at the Rose Garden.
